Ab Workouts
By admin | May 3, 2008
The best ab workouts must involve not only abdominal exercises but also weightlifting and aerobic exercises.
While working out your abdominal muscles will tone them and define them, you must burn off the layer of fat covering these muscles before you can have six pack abs.
Of course, you should start with a solid abdominal workout program, using a combination of the best ab exercises.
Then, you should initiate a proper “ab aerobics” regimen - one that will rev up your metabolism, help you start to burn off the calories, and start to expose your sexy sick pack abs.
An interesting recent study
A recent study of dieting versus aerobic exercise revealed an interesting trend - people who did aerobic exercise lost more fat from their abdominal area than people who dieted.
The dieters ate 700 fewer calories and the exercise group burned off 700 daily calories, resulting in the same amount of TOTAL weight loss, but the aerobic exercise group lost about 33% more fat from the abdominal areas.
This study makes a pretty compelling argument: if you want ripped abs, do aerobic exercise!
The best aerobic exercises to get six pack abs
What are the best aerobic exercises to burn off the fat covering your rectus abdominus muscle and give you washboard abs?
In a sense, ANY aerobic exercise will do. Always start by checking with your doctor, before you begin any aerobics regimen.
Then, the best and simplest way to begin is to take a brisk 30 minute walk every day. Just get going fast enough to elevate your pulse rate slightly.
After you have grown accustomed to daily aerobic exercise, you can either walk longer each day (work your way up to an hour daily, taking a day off to rest each week), or you can try a more intense form of exercise.
The next step
Next, you might want to try either running or, better yet, swimming or in-line skating. If you have a gym membership, try a step aerobics class or the elliptical trainer - these are some of the best ab workouts.
An even better option for quick weight loss is a spinning class (but definitely check with your doctor first, especially if you have any heart issues, for this can be an intense class).
In all ab workouts or weight loss programs, you inevitably run the risk of hitting a plateau - a point where, despite your continued diet and exercise, you simply can’t seem to lose any more weight.
Hitting a plateau can be the must frustrating moment in your quest for ripped abs. So what do you do if this happens?
What to do if you hit a plateau
In this instance, you need to mix up your routine. Maybe alternate exercises: swim one day, walk the next, inline skate the day after that.
Or, maybe even better, incorporate a muscle building regimen into your routine. Weight training is recommended by the American Council on Exercise in situations where you hit a plateau, because adding more muscle revs up your metabolism and thus can help you resume burning fat.
Whatever you do, an aerobic exercise program is vital to achieving ripped abs and is the most important part of all ab workouts. So get started on your aerobic program today!
